What I'm Doing...

  • 07Oct

People are always asking me what’s new in my business.  I often chuckle because I have SO many projects and programs in the works at any given point in time.  It feels like I’m spinning lots of different plates.  The truth is my focus is definitely on keeping all of the plates spinning and they’re all miraculously connected.

If you’re like me, you know that having many plates spinning at one time doesn’t necessarily mean a lack of focus.  It just depends on the vision, goals and activities that support your business.  Checkout my spinning plates and you’ll see what I mean.

My Spinning Plates are Targets in Focus

    1. WendyY.com relaunch.  It’s all about branding “WendyY.”
    2. A site relaunch for Brilliance In Action, the name of my company - moving and shifting from entrepeneur to CEO.  I’m building the site on a kewl new platform with lots of goodies just for you.
    3. Radio shows and targeted guest appearances with mastermind groups.  I’m having lots of fun with this one.  From past and present interviews, I’ve created a new podcast with all of those interviews — stay tuned for more details.
    4. My next Group Mastery - Mastery and Mentoring Program for coaches, speakers, consultants and trainers.  My team is working on ensuring these group coaching tools are content-rich and easily accessible.  It’s always juicy!
    5. The next DIY Tech Talk - Walk the DIY Walk with Ease about Twitter.  I absolutely love Twitter.  It’s a key part of my social networking strategy that works.  Follow me
    6. A regular column for Woman 2 Woman Business magazine.  In 2009, the publishing schedule shifts to monthly.  I’m honored and thrilled to be of service.
    7. A new group coaching program with Ron Hudson. He’s the Master of Influence and I’m tickled to be working with him.  We’ve got something very kewl in store for you!
    8. A new group coaching intensive specifically for coaches coming up in February, 2009.  Sorry I can’t share more than that right now.
    9. Lots of new activities for my mastermind group of coaches.  I heard cheers when I announced this one to my business, executive and career coaches.  Circle of Brilliance

Here are a couple of the ongoing, weekly plates I keep spinning:

    1. Group Mastery Everyday - group coaching resource posted via audio every week.
    2. New 90 Minute Mastery webinars teaching specific group coaching skills.  Upcoming Webinars
    3. New blog posts for the Group Mastery blog at Group Coaching Mastery.  I’m moving it to a new platform so new posting will resume within the next several days.
    4. Exceptional Experts weekly radio show.  Getting to know really KEWL folks willing to share details about what makes them exceptional.  It’s a different spin on success…the journey is the key!

Tips to help you keep the spinning plates in focus:

    • Focus on activities that incorporate your business vision, mission and goals.  These are more than pretty words that you put on paper and place on binder.  Your vision, mission and goals serve as a rudder keeping your eyes on the prize.
    • Tailor your ”spinning” to suit your values and lifestyle.  I love my freedom for example.  As my vision expands and priorities shift, my sense of freedom and what’s important in my life supports my choices about how, when and where to keep my targets in focus.  Knowing your values is crucial.
    • Focus on activities that have a bottom line impact.  I’m often distracted by new ideas and possibilities.  What can I say?  It’s just part of who I am.  I’ve learned to ask myself targeted questions that ultimately confirm whether the ideas are spin-worthy.
    • Partner with people who share an equal level of respect for you, your programs and services.  It doesn’t mean you have the same perspectives.  It does mean the respect you share for one another ensures the best possible communication around problems that may arise.  This is especially critical as you shift from entrepreneur to CEO.

    Why I wrote this post?

I wrote this post to encourage business owners like me who are transitioning from entrepreneur to CEO.  I hope you’ll find peace knowing that your spinning plates ARE in focus.  I believe that you can keep the plates spinning successfully — without dropping and potentially breaking any.  I know it’s all possible and true when each plate truly represents a target in focus.

What plates are you spinning?  How do your plates speak to your focus?

You know I’ve always been a plate spinner. I’m really glad you made the distinction between entrepreneur and CEO. That puts a whole new perspective on it for me. I think I have felt guilty about being a plate spinner, especially when I talk to some of my friends; they shake their heads and say, “Poor Girl, has absolutely no focus!”

“Yes I do! All these projects tie together with a common thread. All of these projects support and feed leads to each other.”

    I like saying that I’m a CEO!

It also gives me the opportunity to incorporate the talents of others to accomplish everything I have “spinning”.

You’re a girl after my own heart, Wendy Y!

Love you! Can’t wait to read more.

  • Stephanie Bell the Spirit Coach Says:

    Wendy –

Thanks so much for this post. You reminded me of the importance of evaluating my purpose and intention when placing another plate in the air! I agree with you wholeheartedly that spinning plates can be a VERY good thing when each has a specific place in your strategic business planning. And I think that’s a key difference in shifting from a solo/entrepreneur to CEO mindset — as a solopreneur, we sometimes get tunnel vision AND get distracted by shiny objects — so we end up with spinning plates flying no where fast. When we change to a CEO mindset — we can take a helicopter view and see the big picture!

Your programs look great — I’ll stay tuned for further details! : )

    Blessings!

Talking about spinning plates… you hit the nail on the head with this one, Wendy!

I love “My Spinning Plates are Targets in Focus.” Your message motivates me to outline my projects as targets in focus. My vision board needs a new facelift and this is perfect. Honestly speaking, I’ve never been good at being consistent with writing goals and following them to a “T”, but this looks like a very easy plan to follow.

    Thanks for sharing… ;-)

  • Donna Maria @ Indie Business Says:

Nicely put, Wendy! No wonder we were talking on the phone just days after meeting up on Twitter. It’s a thing of beauty to watch how you combine the gifts God has given you with your talents and interests to weave together a homogenous whole. It speaks volumes about who you are as a person that you find so much pleasure in serving and empowering others. Carry on sister … Much Indie Love, dM

We Plate Spinners (TM) need to stick together! Thanks for putting it out there. Seems I’m always trying to explain myself to the lay folks *exactly* as you do in this blog post and fight getting defensive about it when they give me “The Look” that says, “Okay, but…”!

For years, I didn’t even want to share that mindset until after reading Barbara Sher’s work–major validation there. Keep up the good Wendy! Lots of cool things in your hopper! :)

  • Mitch Says:

I certainly understand this concept of multiple spinning plates, because I’m exactly the same way. Unfortunately, most of my spinning plates need me to have some sort of income so I can take the time to do them right, and that’s not always the case. So, every once in awhile, most of them have to take a back seat so I can juice up the bank account, then go back and figure out which one I want to do next. But it’s that consistent stuff I do to keep credibility that, luckily enough, I can keep up on, and that’s always a good thing. Great post.

  • Ron Hudson Says:

Hi. My name is Ron Hudson. I’m a plate spinner. LOL!!!

    Great post Wendy Y!

As you know, I’m a results driven and purpose focused guy so my spinning plates are meant to serve the greater good (i.e., contributing to personal and professional success of those I have the privilege to touch), my family, and me. As I evaluate my spinning plates I continually ask myself several questions but here’s one of the most important, “Why I am doing this?”.

Quite frankly, if I can’t generate excellent reasons to pursue a particular result, outcome, or goal, I know right away that the motivation to make it happen will be low and I’ll move on to something else. That way, I can keep a smile on my face most of the time while spinning my plates. Make sense?

    Gotta run!

You’re interviewing me this morning, aren’t you?

    Talk soon.

    With your success in mind,

    Ron

  • The Self Esteem Queen Says:

Wendy - What can I say? I knew I wasn’t the only one who juggled many things on her plate. Listen, the great mind of an entrepreneur spins and those thoughts are put into our head to assist us in living our purpose!

I am glad I’m not the only plate spinner in the crowd…All these domain names and so little time to explain the concept for each! My mind is constantly on the go! I love that about myself!

  • Sharon McPherson Says:

Wow! I thought I had a lot plates in the air but you’ve got me beat Wendy. Like those who commented above, I’m glad you validated my belief that it is ok to be a plate spinner - as long as they’re all spinning in the same direction, and thanks for the great tips to keep them that way.

  • Karen Swim Says:

Wendy, allow me to first say “Congratulations” on all of the great things you are spinning! As I read your list I saw the common thread of indulging in your passion and helping others to realize their success. I am a huge believer in purpose and allow that to be my driving force. There are many things I could be doing for momentary success but if they are not aligned with my purpose they are not spin worthy. Your tips cut to the heart of that, in knowing who you are, what you are called to do and spinning what and how suits you. I look forward to celebrating your continued successes, and I know there will be many.

  • Cathy Holloway Hill Says:

Oh my goodness Wendy! I am spinning on 12 wheels! I recently left corporate america to focus on my consulting business, C. Holloway Hill Enterprises, and it’s been a whirlwind of activity. I am having soooooooooooo much fun. I keep asking myself “is work suppose to be this much fun?” And I already know the answer is YES! I am truly living my purpose, and I’m blessed to have multiple plates spinning.

  • Dr. Wright Says:

At Wright Place TV Show we are spinning a bunch of plates until we go dark on December 10th. That give me time to relax and move into the new year without the holiday crazies on me. We are doing seminars, live shows at events and of course, putting out more TV shows to help entrepreneurs. and of course, I will be on The Wendy Y show soon, so I am excited about that!

  • Barbara J. Faison Says:

    Wendy Y,
You are the queen of spinning plates and so many other things. The beauty of your spinning plates is that you are also effective with keeping them all going and doing the all very well. I applaud you for the capability and the energy it requires to do so seemingly effortless.

You are my shero! Love you!
